Formula Racing Explained

Q: What is Formula racing?

A: Traditionally riders race against other riders of the same year of birth, and sometimes are mixed with other age groups when numbers are down. With formula racing riders race against riders of similar ability, this is achieved by having 6 racing groups ( Formulas 1 – 6 ).

Q: Why do we use it?

A: We feel this will benefit all of the established Club riders, by giving them the opportunity of taking part in more competitive races, and will also help any new riders coming into the sport to quickly obtain their ability level, rather than being pitched in with more experienced riders of their own age.

Q: What group am I going to be in?

A: Riders will enter into a formula based on their year of birth. The intention is to have 6 even groups and as we can't predict the numbers and ages of riders prior to the first meeting, the age range of each formula will be established on the first night. Due to the obvious introduction of new riders during the season it may become necessary to amend the groups in order to keep the numbers balanced between each group.

Q: How do I get into another group?

A: At the end of each weeks racing, the top two riders of each formula will be promoted to the next formula, with the bottom two riders being demoted down a formula. This movement will be highlighted on the rider's registration card and will be implemented the next time they race.

Q: Do I still get a trophy and how will the points be worked out?

A: Trophies will still be awarded for Series 1 and 2, and for the end of season positions based on age groups. At the end of each race night, a list of riders will be produced showing their finishing positions in each formula e.g. winner of formula 1 at the top and the last place in formula 6 at the bottom. For each age group the first rider down the list will receive first place points, second will receive second place points etc.

Q: Riding out of age groups, will there be a conflict with number plates?

A: To overcome this we will be issuing each rider with their own Club race plate number. We would ask that you make sure you use this number every week.

If this sounds a bit complicated and you do have any questions please do not be afraid to ask anyone at registration.
